Developing the Next Generation of Accountants: Building Confidence, Community, and Real World Skills

A meaningful first experience in the accounting world can spark the direction of someone’s entire career. That’s why our internship program is built to give students an authentic look at the profession and what it feels like to be part of our team.

A Hands‑On Internship That Actually Feels Like Accounting

This internship is all about giving students meaningful, real‑world experiences from the moment they arrive.

From day one, interns prepare real individual income tax returns — everything from simple W‑2s to more complex filings with investments or small business activity. They collaborate, ask questions, compare notes, and learn how to think through real client situations.

Each intern is paired with a mentor who is there to answer questions and offer guidance. Whether it’s a technical question or just figuring out how to navigate their first office job, there’s always someone ready to help. It makes the office feel smaller, friendlier, and a lot less intimidating.

While tax prep is the main focus, we also educate interns across other areas of taxation, including individual, fiduciary, entity, gift, and estate, as well as client accounting services — broadening their understanding of the services we provide our clients.

It’s a small snapshot of what we do, but a meaningful one.

Creating an Experience That Sticks With You

One of the things I appreciated most when I went through this same program years ago was how included I felt — like I wasn’t “just an intern,” but someone the team genuinely wanted to invest in. That’s something I’ve worked hard to carry forward.

My job isn’t only to teach interns how to prepare tax returns. It’s to help them walk away with an experience that stays with them — the kind that shapes how they approach their careers long after the internship ends.

I want them to feel what I felt:

  • the excitement of learning something real
  • the confidence that comes from solving a problem
  • the comfort of being part of a supportive team
  • the understanding that accounting is about people just as much as numbers

Many of our full‑time personnel started right here in this program. Watching them grow from interns into professionals is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Navigating an Ever‑Changing Profession — Especially With AI in the Mix

There’s no denying it: AI has changed the accounting world. For students entering the field, it can feel both exciting and a little overwhelming. It’s natural to wonder what the future looks like or how technology will shape the work ahead.

AI is transforming the profession, but it’s not replacing the heart of what accountants do. If anything, it’s making the human side even more important. Our coworkers, advisors and clients still rely on judgment, communication, trust, and relationships. Technology can support those things, but it can’t replace them.

That’s why we make sure interns see both sides — the tools that are changing the work and the human skills that will always matter.

Why This Matters

The future of accounting depends on how we develop young professionals today. And that starts with giving them an internship that’s real, supportive, and genuinely enjoyable — one that embraces new technology while reminding them that people are still at the center of this work. The profession is always evolving, and we want interns to understand how to grow with it while staying grounded in the values that matter.

Closing Message for Prospective Interns

If you’re looking for an internship where you can learn real skills, meet good people, and get an honest feel for what this profession is like, we’d be glad to have you. You don’t need to show up with all the answers — or know everything on day one — just bring your curiosity and a willingness to grow. This program made a difference for me when I was in your shoes, and I hope it can do the same for you.
